Good to see that my work can continue whilst I'm a Councilor!
It also means I am allowed to have my work published here as well, which is a nice perk.
As for my work, I have been quite busy unearthing history as it happened, and not as it was recorded. This is a ridiculously over-wrought task that the previous men and women set for the job all 'retired" within a few months.
Seems none of them could quite cope with the stress of having results by the month.
But I have excelled for years at it!
This term's subject matter covers a battle all the way back in the time of the Sixth Age, between Zarosian combatants and with the Godless.
Those of you even slightly versed in our national heritage, you know I am referring to the Downfall of Lassar in Year 44 of the Sixth Age.
What's the age-old story?
Zarosians, huddled in a massive cathedral atop the Ice Mountain. They were surrounded by Saradominist and Godless forces alike. Whilst the Saradominists took a stance of waiting till nightfall to burn the city down, the Godless rose at sunrise instead.
No survivors, and all was lost.
Even one Zarosian hero, name lost to time, was killed.
Oh, but there is quite a lot missing from this tale.
For starters, there was not a cathedral atop the mountain. Not even a well-kept church.
So, for your reading pleasure, the truth, of the Downfall of Lassar.
Dawn, Novtumber 18th, Year 44
The settlement of Lassar was, by all records, a military fortress.
Around the lowest portions of the mountain, the forests were barren, destroyed by the Zarosians so as to avoid sneak attacks.
The former local Saradominists, by in large peaceful and more than willing to work with others, were either missing or dead, after being displaced, they had become prime targets for the Godless vanguard.
The Zarosians, for their part, had carved a bloody path towards Varrock, and towards the majority of their forces. The fort was made by the incredible Mahjarrat, and was furnished with war machines and supplies in a matter of hours, in preparation for a long standing siege, and a bloody march to the east.
They were Abyss-bent on getting to the east, and were not about to let the growing numbers of the Godless stop them.
On their flank was the most militant portion of the Saradominist forces, and they were preparing for a heavy retaliatory assault. Most of our texts speak of them racing to kill the 'refugees' of Lassar, but in fact, they were preparing to help defend Varrock and any remaining settlements in Asgarnia and Misthlain not already under assault.
So, what happened to such a fortified location?
Commander Martin Oberson had the troops run daily tasks, as was protocol, whilst he met with General Wahisietel and Commander Nex. The sun was over Varrock, and illuminated the first pass of the mountain, where a small group of soldiers stood guard.
The Godless took the chance to strike, easily killing the new guards at the gate, and slipping into the mountain path without being noticed.
Once General Wahisietel had finished the brief, he and Commander Nex left, oddly enough in a hurry.
Other than the Godless strike, the day unfolded normally.
Here, history books speak of atrocities occurring, culminating in the garrison commander going mad and letting in the enemy. I don't have to reiterate how asinine that is, but I will describe what happened truthfully regardless.
Unbeknownst to them, Wahisietel and Nex had gone to the nearby Saradominist detatchment, asking for reinforcement due to the enemy forces that had 'overwhelmed' a small village of refugees. The Saradominists, however cautious they were, knew that assisting could grant them the chance to secure the mountain, and protect the majority of the two kingdoms from northern threats at last, and sent a large portion of their forces to go assist.
The Saradominists to the west, the Godless to the east, and the unknowing Zarosians in the middle.
Surely causing a three way conflict would be self-defeating, would it not?
Ah, but you see, the Zarosians in the middle were not fit for military service. The guards were young, injured or old, and the citizens were merely a poorly armed militia playing military. The Godless strike force would easily devour them, and the Saradominists would like fight off the Godless and claim the mountain.
That is of course, unless the Zarosians had a trick up their sleeves.
Much as Saint Sliske (though I wonder why he'd be called a 'saint', even with his noted accomplishments towards the betterment of Zarosians, he still was ex-communicated for his even more numerous actions against us) would have done, the powerful duo had made their weakest bait for the two strong foes to be hooked into. Once on the hook, they would erase the forces.
With their combined might, they unleashed a horrid blizzard, freezing any living thing on or a little ways near the mountain to the marrow, killing all preset, save for the casters themselves.
This action allowed the massive Zarosian forces of the western front to easily waltz into the mountain camp, gather the supplies that were always meant for them, and head down east and make camp just at the river's edge, and within eyesight of Varrock.
Though you may be a Zarosian (or not), I think it is wise to judge those that claim leadership over you with an honest lens, and to truly think whether you wish to be their worker or not.
I mean, why fight for a cause that isn't yours?
I hope my revelation of the past helps you decide the future, and to help further our kingdom's peace.
